The Vikings left an extraordinary mark on history, voyaging across oceans, establishing settlements and trading from North America to the edges of Asia. Yet behind their fearsome reputation was a sophisticated society whose survival depended upon remarkable practical knowledge.

How The Vikings Lived brings that world vividly back to life.

Working with historians, archaeologists, craftspeople and experimental experts, the series investigates the skills that allowed Norse communities to flourish in some of Europe’s most demanding environments. Reconstructed homes, tools, equipment and clothing provide a tangible connection to the past, while practical demonstrations reveal just how much ingenuity went into seemingly ordinary tasks.

What did a Viking family eat, and how was food preserved through a Scandinavian winter? How were animals hunted and crops cultivated? What did people really wear? How were timber, iron, wool and leather transformed into essential objects? And what combination of craftsmanship and seamanship enabled Viking ships to undertake astonishing journeys across open ocean?

Rather than observing this world from a distance, our experts put historical evidence into practice. Traditional meals are prepared using period methods, garments are recreated and worn, ancient crafts are attempted and reconstructed vessels reveal the physical realities of travelling by sea.

Along the way, archaeology and surviving evidence challenge familiar assumptions about Viking society. Beyond warfare and conquest emerges a world of farmers, traders, explorers, craftspeople and families, connected by traditions stretching across generations.

Immersive, practical and grounded in historical research, How The Vikings Lived reveals Viking history from the inside — not simply through what the Norse achieved, but through the skills, routines and ingenuity that made those achievements possible.
